Prerequisites
Admitted to ArtEZ Bachelor programme Composition for Film and Theatre (required for first year students in Composition for Film and Theatre).
Competencies
Aims
Students are introduced to various instruments, and classical and jazz & pop ensembles, and learn how to write for these forces in their autonomous compositions as well as while working on interdisciplinary productions. Notation is stressed so that students learn to compose for third parties and produce clear scores and parts.
Relation to other modules
This module is related to the CFT first year's general introduction and also gives insight into how knowledge of instrumentation can shape the tone of all sorts of multimedia music composition.
Content
Lessons based on the topics listed under Aims, as well as assignments based on the materials discussed, complemented by lectures and workshops.
Mode(s) of instruction
Group lessons that, depending on the composition of the group, take place entirely on-campus, entirely online or in a combination of both, i.e., that there are attendees both physically in the classroom and virtually via a screen. Online attendees communicate by seeing, talking and listening to each other and the on-campus attendees equally. The teacher has access to a whiteboard, application sharing, desktop sharing and document sharing and can hand this privilege to any other participants.
Apart from the video conference a high quality stereo audio stream is open at the same time via source connect. That way students and instructor can listen to music from any source of the group and talk about it simultaneously.
Material & Tools
Videos, links to articles and websites, hand-outs.
Student activity
Presentations, written assignments, reflections, discussions, analysis of ensembles and instruments across genres. Study of the practical organisation within instrumental groups.
Examination and assessment
Mode(s) of assessment
Evaluated regarding the overall involvement of the student and the small assignments throughout the whole course.
Criteria
Students should have mastered the elements described under Aims.
Pass requirements
The student has completed this module if awarded a minimum grade of 5.5.
Examination procedure
Assessment at the end of the autumn semester is formative and expressed in terms of Satisfactory or Unsatisfactory. It indicates a student's progress in the module. No EC's are awarded, and there is no resit. Modules can only be absolved, and EC's awarded, after the end of the spring semester.

Module summary
This module allows students to acquaint themselves with the culture within various ensembles through analysing/visiting several Classical and Jazz/Pop ensembles, plus getting information on instruments and working on assignments. The student learns about a wide diversity of instruments, which will also help them to choose a minor on top of the mandatory piano classes, if desired. Notation is emphasised so that students can write for other people to perform their music,
